The grade number on a lock’s packaging comes from testing done by ANSI and BHMA, the industry bodies that set hardware standards. A grade is not a brand tier or a price point. It is the result of a lock being run through a defined set of mechanical tests: cycling the lock thousands of times, striking it to simulate forced entry, and loading it to see what it withstands before failing.
Grade 1 is the highest rating under the ANSI/BHMA standards and is built for the heaviest use. Testing runs the lock through roughly 1,000,000 open-and-close cycles and subjects it to the highest strike and impact loads in the standard. Grade 1 hardware is most common on commercial and institutional buildings: offices, schools, and storefronts where a door sees constant daily traffic.
Grade 2 sits in the middle. Cycle testing runs lower than Grade 1, and the strike resistance is reduced accordingly, though still well above entry-level hardware. Grade 2 covers light commercial use and higher-end residential installations, where the traffic is lower than a commercial doorway but more durability is wanted than standard home hardware provides.
Grade 3 is the baseline rating and the one most new residential locks ship at. Cycle counts and strike resistance are the lowest of the three grades, which is adequate for typical home use but the least durable of the three under heavy or repeated stress.
Three things show up across the ANSI/BHMA tests, regardless of grade:
Grade 1 sets the highest bar on all three. Grade 2 and Grade 3 scale down from there.
Grade matters most on doors that get used constantly or that face the street. An exterior door on a home benefits from Grade 2 or Grade 1 hardware even though Grade 3 is the common default, since the upgrade mainly buys resistance to wear and forced entry rather than a different way of operating the lock. A residential locksmith can identify the current grade on a door and recommend an upgrade where the hardware does not match how hard the door is used.
