What to Do When Your Key Breaks Off in the Lock at Night

A key that snaps at night leaves one of two problems. Either the door is locked and you are on the wrong side of it, or the door is open and cannot be locked until morning. Either way, what happens next depends on the piece still sitting in the cylinder.

Leave the broken piece where it is

The part still in your hand matters. With both pieces, a locksmith can cut a working replacement on site, so the job ends with a key and not just an empty lock. On a car key, keep the head especially, since that is where the chip sits.

Locked out, or unable to lock up

If the key broke while unlocking, you are locked out of the house, car, or business until the fragment is extracted.

If it broke while locking up, the problem runs the other way. If you are inside, check whether the interior thumb turn still moves the deadbolt. If the lock will not engage from either side, the door cannot be secured overnight. For a home, or a storefront at closing time, that is a call for a 24 hour locksmith the same night rather than the next morning.

When it happens on a vehicle

If the blade snapped off a remote head key, the buttons on the head still lock and unlock the doors, so a fragment in the car door lock does not necessarily leave you stranded outside the vehicle.

A key broken in the ignition is a different situation. Do not try to turn the ignition with the remaining piece or any other tool. Depending on where the cylinder stopped, an automotive locksmith extracts the fragment from the ignition or replaces the ignition cylinder. For a chip key, the replacement is finished by moving the original chip or remote board into a new shell, or by programming a new key to the vehicle.

How the fragment comes out

Broken key extraction is done with extractor tools: thin blades with hooks or barbs that slide into the keyway alongside the fragment, catch its cuts, and draw it straight out. If the key snapped while turned, the cylinder first has to be rotated back to its starting position, because a key can only be withdrawn from the position it went in.

When the fragment is lodged too deep to reach, the cylinder is removed and taken apart. A stiff or worn lock is a common reason keys break in the first place, and when the cylinder itself is the cause, changing the lock cylinder clears the broken piece and the underlying problem in one visit.
