In most cases, yes. An automotive locksmith can stop a lost car key from starting your vehicle, but how it is done depends on one thing: whether the key has a chip.
Most vehicles built in recent decades use a transponder key, which has a chip inside that the car’s immobilizer reads before the engine will start. Because the vehicle recognizes the key electronically, a locksmith can erase the lost key from the vehicle’s memory through car key programming. Once erased, the missing key may still be physically intact, but the car will no longer accept it.
Some manufacturers, including Ford, Mercury, Mazda, Lincoln, and a few others, add a requirement to this. After the previous keys are erased, two new keys must be programmed before the vehicle will start. A locksmith plans for this, so these vehicles are handled as a two key replacement from the start.
A key with no chip is not recognized electronically, so there is nothing in the vehicle’s memory to erase. The key works purely because it is cut to fit the lock. The only way to make the lost key useless is to change the locks it operates: the ignition, the door lock, and the trunk lock.
The year, make, and model show whether a vehicle uses chipped keys, and a locksmith can confirm this on the phone. That determines whether the job is an erase and reprogram or a change of the ignition and locks, and whether two new keys are required.
When lost car keys may have fallen into someone else’s hands, erasing them matters more than replacing them. A key that no longer starts the car, and a lock cylinder that no longer accepts the old key, remove the risk.
None of this damage is visible from outside the car. It shows up later, sometimes long after the person who did it has forgotten the connection.
Since new keys are being programmed anyway, a spare car key can be added during the same visit. A mobile locksmith brings the cutting and programming equipment to the vehicle, so the car does not have to be moved.
Modern vehicle entry tools are purpose-built for the geometry of current doors. They create a small gap without damaging the seal, and they work in the actual space available without contacting wiring or airbag components. They require training to use correctly on different door designs.
